Preference-Based Semantics for Nonmonotonic Logics
نویسنده
چکیده
A variant is proposed of the preference-based se mantics for nonmonotonic logics that was origi nally considered by Shoham [1987; 1988]. In this variant it is not assumed that preferences between standard models arc aggregated into one preference order. This allows the capturing of all main non monotonic formalisms, including Default Logic oi Reiter [1980]. The preferential models introduced in this paper are motivated from an cpistemic point of view, and are therefore called cpistemic preference models. The consequence operations induced by cpistemic preference models are characterized. Further, the view is defended that the rationality of cumulative monotonicity does not imply thai nonmonotonic logics have to be cumulative, but only that a rational agent should not believe a set of default rules that induces a noncumulative conse quence operation.

Semantics for Nonmonotonic Logics
A variant is proposed of the preference-based semantics for nonmonotonic logics that was originally considered by Shoham (1987,1988). In this variant it is not assumed that preferences between standard models are aggregated into one preference order. This allows the capturing of all main nonmonotonic formalisms, including Default Logic of Reiter (1980). The preferential models introduced in thi...
متن کاملA Uniform Tableaux Method for Nonmonotonic Modal Logics
We present a semantic tableaux calculus for propositional nonmonotonic modal logics, based on possible-worlds characterisations for nonmonotonic modal logics. This method is parametric with respect to both the modal logic and the preference semantics, since it handles in a uniform way the entailment problem for a wide class of nonmonotonic modal logics: McDermott and Doyle's logics and ground l...
متن کاملA Preference Semantics for Ground Nonmonotonic Modal Logics
In this paper we provide a semantic characterization of ground logics, a family of nonmonotonic modal logics obtained by means of a variant of the well known Mc Dermott and Doyle xed point equation. The term ground logics carries the idea of restricting the negative in-trospection capabilities of the reasoning agent to the objective (i.e. non modal) part of the theory. This intuition was nicely...
متن کاملCompiling Preference Queries in Qualitative Constraint Problems
Comparative preference statements are the basic ingredients of conditional logics for representing users’ preferences in a compact way. These statements may be strict or not and obey different semantics. Algorithms have been developed in the literature to compute a preference relation over outcomes given a set of comparative preference statements and one or several semantics. These algorithms a...
متن کاملDefeasible Modalities
Nonmonotonic logics are usually characterized by the presence of some notion of ‘conditional’ that fails monotonicity. Research on nonmonotonic logics is therefore largely concerned with the defeasibility of argument forms and the associated normality (or abnormality) of its constituents. In contrast, defeasible modes of inference aim to formalize the defeasible aspects of modal notions such as...
